On the 12th May every year we celebrate some of the hardest working, and most important people in society; nurses. Given the huge strain and personal effort of every single nurse, clinician, and healthcare professional to provide exceptional care throughout a global pandemic, this International Nurse’s Day should be one of the biggest yet! This is a day we should use to celebrate these incredible people, and the amazing work they have done over the past 12 months, and of course, before and after that too!
International Nurses Day celebrates not only current nursing achievements, but also the history of nurses and how they have contributed to the formation of the UK healthcare system, been pivotal to medical exploration and discovery, and provide daily support to people all around the world when they need it the most. Coinciding and commemorating Florence Nightingale’s birthday, International Nurses Day is a day of appreciation for all nurses’ accomplishments, both recent and historic.
A Voice to Lead - A vision for future healthcare
This year’s theme for International Nurses Day is A Voice to Lead - A vision for future healthcare, which creates a well-deserved platform to promote and discuss the amazing achievements and advancements in nursing that have marked the last 12 months, and the last several years. This year’s theme aptly celebrates an exciting period of revolution and evolution within nursing and healthcare.
In regards to this year’s theme, Annette Kennedy, president of the ICN has said: “In 2021, we will focus on the changes to and innovations in nursing and how this will ultimately shape the future of healthcare.”
The pandemic sparked rapid and drastic healthcare transformation with nurses leading the charge on several fronts, driving innovation into the heart of the UK healthcare system and bettering the lives of millions of patients both as part of the pandemic effort, and as a part of regular primary and acute care services, etc. To highlight the success of their efforts, the ICN will be focusing on releasing a broad spectrum of case studies demonstrating the innovation and change that nurses have led throughout and after the pandemic, supporting the vaccination programme through the NHS’ first nine priority groups and beyond.
This is an exciting time for the world of nursing - and healthcare more broadly. Nurses are truly in the spotlight and are being celebrated for their work on the frontline. Everyone’s lives have been touched by their patience, compassion, skill, hard work and sacrifice.
