What is an occupational therapist?

Occupational therapists support children and adults live more complete lives by developing treatment programmes aimed to enhance their physical and mental well-being and environments, whether at home, work or school. Working with patients and understanding their lifestyles, occupational therapists support a patient’s wellbeing by assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating treatment plans, setting realistic goals and measuring/monitoring outcomes.

Occupational therapist job requirements

  • Registration with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC)

  • Completion of an occupational therapy programme at undergraduate or postgraduate level

  • Effective verbal and interpersonal skills

  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage often high-volume work or case loads

  • Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills

  • The ability to work one-on-one with patients and as part of a wider team (e.g. doctors or social workers)

  • Empathy, compassion and patience to deal with often distressing situations
