What is a triage nurse?

As the first point of clinical contact for patients, triage nurses are responsible for providing patient assessments, initiating emergency treatment if required, assigning patients to appropriate treatment areas and communicating patients’ status to doctors and nurses. Triage nurses may also answer patient phone calls or offer medical assistance.

Triage nurse job requirements

  • Full standing as a registered nurse

  • Ability to provide medical expertise in emergency settings

  • Clinical and problem-solving experience

  • A calm demeanour and the ability to handle high pressure situations and environments

  • Ability to multitask and make decisions under pressure and with limited information
